Campervan Snow Adventures in New Zealand

Campervan Hire New ZealandParts of New Zealand become a real winter wonderland during the colder months, and if you're heading for the ski fields -- at Mt. Ruapehu in the North Island (Turoa, Whakapapa) and Coronet Peak, Mt Hutt and The Remarkables in the South Island -- it's likely you'll drive from dry conditions to icy conditions in a matter of minutes. Make sure you know your vehicle and check what your insurance will cover before getting in too deep. Snow chains are often complimentary, so don't be afraid to ask your rental company.

Some cold weather driving tips:
  • Drive with your lights on so you can be seen by others
  • Expect the unexpected
  • You may be an experienced driver; don't be overconfident
  • Leave a big gap to the car ahead of you
  • Look further ahead than normal
  • Watch out for black ice, especially around shaded areas and waterways
  • If you skid or slide, take your foot off the accelerator and turn the steering wheel in the direction the vehicle is moving to help gain control
  • If conditions are really severe, delay your travel plans (easier in a campervan)
